Steps
- Activate Lazav by paying ({2} magic symbol) , choosing to have it become a copy of Lesser Masticore if it doesn't have a -1/-1 counter on it, or Butcher Ghoul otherwise.
- Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing Lazav, adding ({C} magic symbol) ({C} magic symbol) .
- When Lazav dies, if it was a copy of Lesser Masticore, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
- Otherwise, Lazav's undying ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it.
- When Lazav enters the battlefield, it triggers, causing you to surveil 1.
- Repeat.
